Just some thoughts on the All-Star game tonight…
First of all, My Main Man Dwyane Wade with 24 points, 10 assists, and 10 rebounds to record only the 3rd triple-double in All-Star history. His company includes Michael Jordan and LeBron James. Now for everything else:
- The West beat the East 152-149 in what looked like a blowout until the final five minutes when it turned into the best All-Star game in recent memory. With the league’s premier players going at it, keeping it close and showing good defense. The West All-Stars just outsized the East and it was obvious. They had the likes of LaMarcus Aldridge, Marc Gasol, Kevin Love and Dirk ins all at the same time against the East’s Andre Iggy, Paul Pierce, Deron Williams, Chris Bosh, and Rajon Rondo. They came out with much more energy and got so many easy dunks and lay-ups to build that lead early. Chris Paul is clearly THE BEST point guard in the league right now, the passes/lobs we just on point (But Steve Nash had the best pass to Russell from basically half-court).
- As much as I hate to admit it, Kevin Love is becoming one of the best power forwards in the game, especially with his three-point accuracy. I just don’t like the fact that he doesn’t really play above the rim, but his ability to grab boards is just crazy sometimes.
- Kevin Durant definitely deserved the MVP award, but LeBron’s 36 were worth a hell of a lot more than Durant’s. Durant got a lot of easy dunks and uncontested shots, and Lebron had to shoot fadeaways off the glass and he had to nail 5 three-pointers to get the East back into the game.
- That being said, I loved that Kobe got PISSED at Lebron for passing the ball on that last play. Being the competitor that Kobe is, he wanted to guard Lebron and have him take that last shot and try to win/tie it, rather than giving up the ball and letting someone else decide the outcome of the game. I don’t think Kobe can just retire until he knows the greatest player in the NBA, Lebron, has the drive and fire to want to take that last shot and be okay to live with the results. Kobe is not going to pass the torch until Lebron comes and pries it from Kobe’s swollen, bruised, and broken hands.
- Which leads to Kobe, passing Michael Jordan for the most points all time in All-Star games. Kobe scored 27 points to end up with 271 points in All-Star games passing Jordan’s previous record of 262.
- Boston’s Paul Pierce and Rajon Rondo really disappointed me. Now I’m not a Boston fan so I wasn’t expecting much from them anyway, but Paul Pierce looked terrible and shot like it as well going 1-for-8 from the field. And Rajon Rondo played 16 minutes to score 2 points off of a cradle scoop lay-up. I don’t know if it was because he didn’t want to scuff his shoes or what, but Rondo failed to utilize his speed to cut into the lane on fast breaks. If he would just have scored 3 or 4 more times on fast breaks which he had the ball, I feel like it would have been enough to give the East at least a better shot to win.
- Typical play from Russell Westbrook coming off the bench, putting up 17 shots which is tied for second with Kobe?!? Really Westbrook? Can you please just pass the ball? or stop pretending to be a point guard? Either one is fine by me. But that being said, he did have a bunch of athletic dunks and lay-ups which is the kind of player he is. You can tell by the way he showboats after every dunk he made.
- Deron Williams surprised me. I always knew he was a solid player, but I never thought he deserved talks of being one of the best point guards in the league. I think part of me not giving him that much credit has something to do with him being on the Jazz for so long, (it’s the same problem I have with Carlos Boozer.) I just don’t like the Jazz, I can’t tell you why, and partly because he went to Turkey to play during the off-season. I feel like superstars don’t go overseas. Just another one of those random things.
I think that’s all of what I had to say. For now anyways. It was fun watching the game and can’t wait for the second half of the season and to see the Miami Heat become NBA Champs!!! Let’s go HEAT~!!!!
